M2 PRESSWIRE-February 9, 2011-: Kazakhtelecom and Alcatel-Lucent launch first field trial in the CIS for 100G optical data transmission; Increasing transport capacity over existing optical networks by a factor of 10(C)1994-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS
RDATE:09022011
Almaty, Kazakhstan -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced it has successfully demonstrated a 100 Gigabit per second (100G) optical network connection linking the cities of Almaty and Taldykurgan with Kazakhtelecom, Kazakhstan's leading operator. Kazakhtelecom operates the country's largest backbone network, which also handles communications transit traffic between Asia and Europe.
Leveraging Alcatel-Lucent's industry-leading technology, the field trial showcased optical 100G connectivity across an existing active dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) link. Beyond expanding network capacity, the trial demonstrated that Kazakhtelecom can also reduce operating and maintenance costs and lower power consumption.
The new solution provides operatorswith the ability to seamlessly increase bandwidth to serve its broadband and fixed voice service subscribers with exceptional transmission quality and to meet the growing demand for video and multimedia applications.
According to theZhamanbalanov Z. A., ManagingDirectorof Technical Development, Kazakhtelecom:"Pioneering 100G in the CIS region, this demonstration proved that 100G live traffic is already possible over our existing optical network and offers us a significant step to meet current and future bandwidth demands with reduced time-to-market. This field trial shows that 100G technologies can scale our fiber links to the multi-terabit capacity necessary to handle this dramatic traffic growth and to position our network as a universal medium for the organization of the transit channels."
"The advancements to our optical portfolio further confirm our customer focus and commitment to help operators accelerate time to service for new applications and simplify their operations and improve performance for lower total cost of ownership" said Alexander Tikhonov, head of Alcatel-Lucent's business in the CIS. "This 100G field trial reaffirms Alcatel-Lucent's innovation leadership in optical networking and its critical role in enabling service providers to seamlessly transform their networks towards higher capacities in a fast and reliably way,"
In this trial, Kazakhtelecom used the Alcatel-Lucent 1626 Light Manager enhanced with 100G next-generation coherent technology through the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS). Designed to address the booming demand for more bandwidth driven by video streaming, web applications and cloud services, Alcatel-Lucent's single-carrier, next-generation coherent technology offers unprecedented resilience to optical transmission impairments across the network. The solution deployed is part of Alcatel-Lucent's Converged Backbone, a key domain of the Alcatel-Lucent High Leverage Network(TM) (HLN) architecture, defined to slash transport costs and dramatically reduce operational complexity in core networks.
