Fed: WA Labor shows modest recovery in poll

The latest poll in West Australia reveals that the Labor government is gaining modest
ground on its Liberal-led opposition, with support almost at the level which won the party
the state election three years ago.

According to a report in the Australian newspaper, the latest Newspoll results recorded
a primary vote of 37 per cent for Labor - similar to its level at election-time in 2001.

Although still behind the combined level of 42 per cent for the Liberal and National
parties, the figures revealed Labor had undergone a modest recovery after it took a nose-dive
six months ago.

Satisfaction with the conduct of WA Premier GEOFF GALLOP has also risen by four points
to 46 per cent, and only 23 per cent of those polled believe opposition leader COLIN BARNETT
would make a better premier.

The poll was based on 855 interviews across WA.
